Thanks to Christian Glessner for letting me know of a change to the Twitter API. This necessitated a change in my Out-Twitter script. There’s been a lot of movement in the PowerShell world with Twitter these days. Be sure to check out the PowerShell tags at TweeterTags and a growing list of PowerShell Twitterers. Even […]

In case you missed it, SAPIEN will be running it’s popular series of online classes for Windows PowerShell. The first Fundamentals class starts March 10 and will run for 4 weeks. We’ll meet online twice a week to go over the material, answer questions and discuss whatever else is on your mind. The classes were […]
Hash Table Happiness
The other day I wrote an entry about using the Dictionary object in VBScript . I alluded to how you could use a hash table in PowerShell. Let me show you how and I think you’ll also appreciate how much more you can do with them in PowerShell with less coding.
Using the VBScript Dictionary
I don’t want you to think that it is PowerShell now and forever more. VBScript isn’t going away anytime soon and I still answer plenty of VBScript questions in the forums at ScriptingAnswers.com. A topic that has come up several times in recent days is the Dictionary object. It is easy to use in VBScript and often comes in handy. Let me show you how.
Are you leading me on?
Recently in the VBScript forum at ScriptingAnswers.com there was a question about creating a file name from the current date, but with leading zeros. This is a pretty common question. It is easy enough to get the month or day portion of the current day.
dy=Day(Now)
However there is no VBScript function to format this to provide a leading 0. Neither FormatDate or FormatNumber can help. So instead I offered a function. Here is a modified version of what I originally offered that is a little more flexible.

PrimalScript 2009: File Differencing
PrimalScript 2009 includes a new integrated file difference tool that provides more information and syntax colored displays and allows for faster review of individual modifications. Let’s take a look at how this operates. To compare file differences, first open the files you want to view using the Tools | Compare Two Files menu option. Select […]
PowerShell WMI Wizard
If you are a long time PrimalScript user, you know that it has always had support and wizards for WMI. The upcoming PrimalScript 2009 adds some new WMI features. But I like to tinker, especially with PowerShell. So I created a simple PowerShell script that creates an expression using Get-WMIObject. Think of it as a PowerShell WMI Wizard script.
Where do I begin?
“I’m new to scripting and need a book recommendation.” “Should I learn VBScript or PowerShell?” “What are some good books for learning scripting?”
These are natural and common questions. A few years ago the answers would have been simple. But today if you are just getting started with administrative scripting, the answers only bring more questions. The real question isn’t what book should you read but what technology should you learn? If you are a a SAPIEN blog reader I’m going to assume that the choice comes down to VBScript or PowerShell. The quick answer is to learn both, but I realize that’s not practical. So let’s look at this a bit further and realize that some of this will change once PowerShell v2.0 is released as part of Windows 7 and depending on your adoption of Windows 7.
PowerShell Boot Camp
We’re starting to get registrations for the PowerShell Boot Camp to be held in Dallas, TX February 9-11, 2009. This will be unlike any other training experience you’ve ever had. Never even seen a PowerShell prompt? Not to worry. The class starts from ground zero and accelerates from there as fast you as you […]
