{"id":7763,"date":"2014-09-23T06:59:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/?p=7763"},"modified":"2014-09-23T06:59:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:59:28","slug":"powerregex-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.sapien.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/23\/powerregex-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"PowerRegEx 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those of you who previously tried the community preview of PowerRegEx 2014 will notice that we made some significant changes to the tool.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the new features of PowerRegEx 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ribbon Interface<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first major change is the new ribbon interface:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image_thumb2.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"143\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The ribbon interface makes it easier to access the application functions and features.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image6.png\" width=\"569\" height=\"151\">&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The <strong><em>Clipboard<\/em><\/strong> section contains the usual copy and paste buttons, but in addition it includes the option to copy your regular expression formatted for PowerShell and other languages:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image7.png\" width=\"296\" height=\"235\"> <\/p>\n<p>The <strong><em>Navigation<\/em><\/strong> section allows you to quickly go to a specific line in the document viewer or navigate between your regular expression matches. <\/p>\n<p>The <strong><em>Export<\/em><\/strong> section allows you to export your regular expressions into a text document.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><em>Windows<\/em><\/strong> section allows you to show hidden panels and provides access to the Options dialog. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Updated Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The editor consists of a Regular Expression input line where you enter your expression and a document viewer where the expression is matched against. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image_thumb3.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"94\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The document viewer \/ editor allows you to test your regular expressions against any file. In addition, the view provides syntax coloring for a variety of file types including: PowerShell files, VB files, C# files, bat files, php files, xml files and many more.<\/p>\n<p>You also have the option to customize the coloring of regular expression matches including the option to choose an alternate color for odd number matches. Using an alternate color scheme makes it easier to distinguish matches that are side by side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image9.png\" width=\"574\" height=\"106\"> <\/p>\n<p>New options include the ability restore the last open document and the last regular expression on start up. This way you can continue to work where you last left off when ever you open the application.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Panels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to make it easier to work with regular expressions we added a few panels to PowerRegEx 2014. The panels help keep all the relevant information visible at all times without having to constantly dig into a menu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>RegEx Constructs Panel<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The<em> RegEx Constructs Panels<\/em> lets you browser and select regular expression constructs: <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image_thumb4.png\" width=\"135\" height=\"244\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>You can expand or collapse each section by clicking on the arrow to the right of the group title:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image_thumb5.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"179\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>To insert the desired construct into your current expression simply double-click the construct. <\/p>\n<p>The<em> RegEx Constructs Panel<\/em> contains an <em>Expressions<\/em> section that includes predefined expressions:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image12.png\" width=\"287\" height=\"152\"> <\/p>\n<p>When you double-click on a predefined expression, it replaces your current expression with the selected expression.<\/p>\n<p>You can add your own expressions to the list by using the <em>Save Expression<\/em> button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image13.png\" width=\"477\" height=\"153\"> <\/p>\n<p>All expressions are saved in the snippet format, so that you have the option to import them into other editors if you desire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Examples Panel<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PowerRegEx 2014 automatically displays an example in the <em>Examples Panel<\/em> when you select a construct from the RegEx Constructs Panel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image_thumb6.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"105\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The <em>Examples Panel<\/em> makes it easy for you to copy and paste the example expressions.<\/p>\n<p>If you select a custom predefined expression in the <em>RegEx Constructs Panel<\/em>, the<em> Example Panel<\/em> will display the details of the snippet:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image_thumb7.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"105\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Output Panel<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Output Panel<\/em> displays any error messages caused by incorrectly formatted regular expressions:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image_thumb8.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"97\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Status Bar<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>PowerRegEx 2014\u2019s status bar is used to display the number of matches found within the open document. As of build v1.0.11, the status bar also displays the total time the RegEx expression query took to execute on the open file. The query time gives you a good indication of the performance of your regular expresses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/image17.png\" width=\"260\" height=\"27\"> <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As you can see we made a lot of improvements to PowerRegEx 2014 since its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/26\/introducing-powerregex-community-preview\/\">community preview announcement<\/a>.
