{"id":15151,"date":"2018-07-02T06:00:42","date_gmt":"2018-07-02T13:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/?p=15151"},"modified":"2018-06-29T12:03:49","modified_gmt":"2018-06-29T19:03:49","slug":"primalscript-2018-adds-git-version-control-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.sapien.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/02\/primalscript-2018-adds-git-version-control-support\/","title":{"rendered":"PrimalScript 2018 adds Git Version Control Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAPIEN Technologies is pleased to announce that PrimalScript 2018 will support Git as a version control system starting with version 7.4.114.\u00a0 Support for VersionRecall will remain as well as support for MS SCCS API (Microsoft Source Code Control System API) based systems, for example Team Foundation Server.<br \/>\nIt is important to note that MS SCCS API systems and Git are mutually exclusive\u2014so if you are using a legacy system you cannot use Git and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>Support for Git is routed through a new interface called Universal Version Control System. The requirements are very basic: any system that can be supported must be command-line based, it\u2019s output needs to be able to be redirected, and you will of course need to install it.<\/p>\n<p>You can download Git here: <a title=\"https:\/\/git-scm.com\/downloads\" href=\"https:\/\/git-scm.com\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/git-scm.com\/downloads<\/a>. Please note that you must choose the <em>Use Windows Command Prompt<\/em> option during installation.<\/p>\n<p>PrimalScript looks for Git in its default installation location under C:\\Program Files\\Git. If you installed it in some other location you will need to modify some files before you can use it, but more on that later.<\/p>\n<p>To enable Git in PrimalScript, navigate to <strong>File<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Options<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Source Control<\/strong> &gt; <strong>General<\/strong> and select <strong>Git<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image_thumb.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"640\" height=\"364\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now when you open a file the <strong>Tools<\/strong> tab will have a <strong>Git<\/strong> group with a variety of commands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image-7.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image_thumb-7.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"640\" height=\"104\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here is a close-up view of the available commands. These are some of the most common, basic Git commands and should let you do most things with the push of a button.<\/p>\n<p>In the next blog article about this new functionality we will show you how you can customize these commands and add your own.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image-8.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image_thumb-8.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"371\" height=\"113\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here is a quick run through for using Git with the assumption that the folder the file resides in is not yet under Git control:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open a file in PrimalScript<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong>Tools<\/strong> tab, in the <strong>Git<\/strong> group, press <strong>Init<\/strong> to add a Git repository to the folder where the file is located.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image-3.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image_thumb-3.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"640\" height=\"80\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next, add the file to the repository by selecting <strong>Add<\/strong>. This will also do an initial commit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image-4.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image_thumb-4.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"640\" height=\"139\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After you have modified a file, tested it, and saved it, you can use <strong>Commit<\/strong> to add a new version of the file to your Git repository<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image-5.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image_thumb-5.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"640\" height=\"186\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Each Commit will prompt for a comment and that comment will be shown in the subsequent tool output.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image-6.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/image_thumb-6.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"640\" height=\"155\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it for now. If you are not familiar with Git we recommend reading up on it before experimenting with the other commands.<\/p>\n<p>This is the beginning of our support for Git and similar source code control systems in PrimalScript, so stay tuned for new features and additional UI elements in the coming months.
