In this blog, Part 2, we introduce our new debugging features, including variable and function breakpoints and improvements to the Variables pane.<\/li>\n<p>But, there&#8217;s more:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/29\/powershell-studio-2016-released-whats-new-part-1\/\">Part 1<\/a>, we review the new UI features, including our new dark themes.<\/li>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/07\/powershell-studio-2016-whats-new-part-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Part 3<\/a>, we look at some of the new editor features of PowerShell Studio 2016.<\/li>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/15\/powershell-studio-2016-custom-primalsense\/\" target=\"_blank\">Part 4<\/a>, we show the new customizable PrimalSense in PowerShell Studio 2016.\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first debugging feature we are looking at is the new interface for dynamic breakpoints.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image-13.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image_thumb-11.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"304\" height=\"104\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Variable Breakpoints<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You can trigger a break when a variable is read or modified, by setting a Variable Breakpoint:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SNAGHTML1149a41.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"SNAGHTML1149a41\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SNAGHTML1149a41_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML1149a41\" width=\"304\" height=\"104\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Variable:<\/strong> Enter the name of the variable. Dollar sign is not necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>File:<\/strong> Bind the breakpoint to a particular file. Leave blank to apply to the current session instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong> Specifies commands that run at each breakpoint instead of breaking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mode:<\/strong> Determines the mode of access that triggers variable breakpoints (Read, ReadWrite, Write).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Function Breakpoints<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You can also trigger a breakpoint when a particular command is called, by setting a Function Breakpoint:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SNAGHTML11a21e7.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"SNAGHTML11a21e7\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SNAGHTML11a21e7_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML11a21e7\" width=\"304\" height=\"84\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Function:<\/strong> Enter the name of the command.<\/p>\n<p><strong>File:<\/strong> Bind the breakpoint to a particular file. Leave blank to apply to the current session instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong> Specifies commands that run at each breakpoint instead of breaking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Edit Breakpoints Dialog<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Edit Breakpoint dialog allows you to view all the breakpoints and tracepoints in one location.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SNAGHTML11bb993.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"SNAGHTML11bb993\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SNAGHTML11bb993_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML11bb993\" width=\"304\" height=\"168\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Enable \/ Disable \/ Remove Breakpoints<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can enable or disable the specific breakpoint by unchecking the check box:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image-14.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"347\" height=\"136\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Add Breakpoints<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using the buttons at the top, you can add new variable and function breakpoints.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image-15.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"276\" height=\"168\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Remove Breakpoints<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To remove the highlighted breakpoints, press the X button.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Edit Breakpoints<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can also edit existing variable or function breakpoints directly:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image-16.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image_thumb-12.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"644\" height=\"90\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Filter Breakpoints<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When dealing with a large number of breakpoints, you can filter specific types of breakpoints using the filter drop-down menu:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image-17.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image_thumb-13.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"304\" height=\"168\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you are done editing the breakpoints, to commit the changes, click <em>OK<\/em>. To undo the changes, click <em>Cancel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Variable Panel Updates<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We revamped the Variable Panel to make it easier to find the variables you are looking for.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image-18.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image_thumb-14.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"404\" height=\"124\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Filtering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can now choose to selectively display variables, such as: user variables, PowerShell variables, or all variables.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image-19.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image_thumb-15.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"342\" height=\"113\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Search<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To filter variables by name, type the variable into the Search box.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image-20.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sapien.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image_thumb-16.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"404\" height=\"124\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We hope these new features will improve your overall debugging experience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned for Part 3 of \u201cPowerShell Studio 2016: What\u2019s New?\u201d blog series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PowerShell Studio 2016 is released!
